Before, during, or near the end of our experiences in graduate school, we made the decision to continue our scientific trackas postdoctoral fellows. According to the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health(grants.nih.gov/training/Reed_Letter.pdf), a postdoctoral fellow is “an individual who has received a doctoral degree (or equivalent) and is engaged in a temporary and defined period of mentored advanced training to enhance the professional skills and research independence needed to pursue his or her chosen career path.
