Brief Description of Research Interest :
My long term goal is to pursue a career in biomedical mass spectrometry (MS) research. The opportunity to perform research in an area such as diabetes which has the potential to make a significant societal impact is very appealing to me. I believe that the recent explosive growth in MS capabilities could help to address a number of current clinically-relevant research topics and that efforts to transfer these developing analytical technologies directly to more front-line biologists and physicians will be extremely valuable. In order to achieve this, as an independent researcher I think it will be imperative to have interdisciplinary training in both fundamental mass spectrometry and some type of molecular physiology. Toward this goal, my dissertation work has provided me with a thorough understanding of how mass spectrometers function and in what ways they can be manipulated to perform desired experiments. This in-depth comprehension has provided me with the tools to be creative and more intelligently explore the limits of MS technologies. In my current position, I am gaining interdisciplinary training in pancreatic islet biology.
